Gubeikou has been renowned since ancient times for its majestic and perilous terrain, endowed with superior strategic military location. The "Miyun County Annals" describes Gubeikou as, "Beijing controls the northern frontier, among the regions under Shuntian, the three crucial passes—Songting, Gubeikou, and Juyong—are of paramount importance, with Gubeikou being the most critical." Gubeikou attracted countless literati and scholars with its unique military culture; eminent poets like Su Zhe, Liu Chang, and Nalan Xingde left behind numerous celebrated verses here. Emperors Kangxi and Qianlong repeatedly praised it, lauding its rugged terrain and strategic importance with the phrase "Geographically controlling the throat leading to the northern desert, heaven left it as a lock and key on this mighty pass."
